New Year, New Fear - 5 Relatable Quotes to Inspire Your Next Steps Forward

Every year, we go to sleep one night - tired and ragged from the past year - and wake up the next morning with a new energy, and that’s what I like to call hope. Whatever you call it - a clean slate, a fresh start, an open road...it’s yours. Naturally, as time goes by, and we settle back into our routines, doubts and fears begin to infiltrate our minds and hearts.

So, to begin this new year, and new decade, I’m bringing you 5 of my favorite quotes to inject a bit of inspiration as you begin to move toward whatever you’re hoping for. I’d recommend you bookmark this one so you can come back to it when you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by the fears that are creeping into your mind and heart.

"If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough." - Richard Branson This one is all about playing small, and comfort zones. If you aren’t dreaming outside of your comfort zone, you’ll never leave it. Make sure you’re checking in with yourself regularly to make sure that what you’re approaching is challenging you to a new level.

“We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” - Seneca Overthinking - this is a big one. Oh the stories we create in our minds about what could go wrong. But do you ever stop and think about what could go right? What could change for the better? Try focusing on those success points (big and small), and see how that shifts your mindset around approaching your next steps.

“You are being presented with two choices: evolve, or repeat.” - Unknown Have you ever seen the movie Groundhog’s Day? Didn’t you feel exhausted for “Phil”, living the same day over and over again? Well, how did he eventually regain control and stop the endless repetition? He evolved. He changed his behavior. If you want to achieve something new, or break a cycle that’s no longer working - you can’t expect to be able to do everything the same. Change your behavior, change your life.

“F.E.A.R. has two meanings: Forget Everything And Run, or Face Everything And Rise.” - Unknown

I love a good acronym. This is one I feel like we all need to tattoo on our wrists, or make some kind of bracelet out of. The reminder here is that FEAR is all about perspective. How you look at a situation, or a word, effects how you experience it and show up in the world. You can either run from fear and let it control your life, or you can face it and take that control back.

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” - Nelson Mandela

Is there anything that Nelson Mandela said that didn’t cut right to your heart? When I was in college, I took a course called, “Post-Colonial African Literature”, and it had to be one of my favorite classes. What I loved about every book we read, was the consistent theme of hope that ran through the voices of the characters. Difficult decisions are never made without fear, but they are also not made without hope. Hope is what steps you over the line, despite fear. So, the next time you’re grappling with a decision, sit back and think about what you’re hoping for and see where it takes you.

Of course, there are many many more quotes about fear that I could have featured here, but, I hope these get you started as you think about how you want to approach your goals and dreams for the next decade.

And by the way, this post is the first in a series that I’ll be featuring as part of my theme of “Jump-in January” - a month dedicated to getting started toward something. So be sure to join me on Facebook for some additional fun experiences, along with my weekly blog posts here.
